The Steel Fabrication Process Explained, Step by Step
How structural and industrial steel fabrication works: drawings, material procurement, cutting, drilling, fitting, welding, inspection, surface treatment, marking and dispatch.

Short answer: Steel fabrication turns design drawings into finished members in eight main steps: shop drawing preparation and approval, material procurement with certificates, cutting and drilling, fitting and assembly, welding to qualified procedures, inspection and testing, surface treatment (blasting, painting or galvanizing), and marking, packing and dispatch in erection sequence.
Whether it's a warehouse frame, a pipe rack or a set of platforms, fabrication follows a similar sequence. Understanding it helps clients plan approvals and avoid delays.
1. Shop drawings
Design drawings are converted into detailed shop drawings showing every member, hole, weld and plate. They are submitted for consultant approval. See shop drawings for steel structures.
2. Material procurement
Sections, plates, bolts and consumables are ordered to the specification, with mill certificates checked on receipt (documents to request).
3. Cutting
- Sawing of beams, columns and hollow sections
- Plasma, oxy-fuel or laser profiling of plates (cutting methods)
- Shearing of thin plate and flats
Heat numbers are transferred to cut pieces to maintain traceability.
4. Drilling, punching and coping
CNC beam lines drill bolt holes and cope flanges accurately and quickly.
5. Fitting and assembly
Fitters position plates, cleats and stiffeners and tack-weld assemblies, checking dimensions against drawings.
6. Welding
Welders complete welds using qualified procedures (WPS) — commonly SMAW, GMAW, FCAW or SAW. See welding processes and WPS and PQR.
7. Inspection and testing
- Visual inspection of welds
- NDT (MT, UT, RT) as specified (NDT for steel)
- Dimensional checks
- Records against the ITP
8. Surface treatment
Blast cleaning, then painting to the specified system, or hot-dip galvanizing (paint systems, galvanizing).
9. Marking, packing and dispatch
Each piece is marked to match erection drawings, bundled, and dispatched in erection sequence with packing lists.
10. Quality dossier
Certificates, weld maps, NDT reports, DFT records and inspection reports are compiled for handover.
How clients can speed things up
- Provide complete IFC drawings and specifications
- Approve shop drawings promptly
- Agree the ITP early
- Confirm erection sequence
