Steel pipes: ERW, seamless and galvanized

Pipe selection is driven by the service: water and fire fighting networks, oil and gas lines, process piping, piling or structural applications all have different standards, wall thicknesses and inspection needs.

Overview

We handle enquiries for welded (ERW, LSAW, SSAW) and seamless carbon steel pipes, plain end, bevelled or threaded, black or galvanized. Provide nominal size, schedule or wall thickness, standard and end finish, and we will confirm availability and documentation.

Available forms

  • ERW pipes
  • Seamless pipes
  • Hot-dip galvanized (GI) pipes
  • LSAW / SSAW large diameter pipes
  • Line pipe to API 5L
  • Plain, bevelled, threaded & coupled ends

Selection guidance

How to specify steel pipes

01

Seamless vs welded

Seamless pipe is preferred for high pressure and high temperature (e.g., ASTM A106). ERW is economical and widely used for water, structural and low-to-medium pressure service.

02

Schedule is not a fixed thickness

Schedule 40 wall thickness changes with diameter. Always confirm the actual wall thickness in mm for design and weight calculations.

03

Fire fighting systems need listed material

Fire protection projects often require pipes to a specific standard and approval (e.g., ASTM A795 or UL/FM listed). Check the Civil Defense and project specification.

Steel Pipes: FAQs

What is the difference between ASTM A53 and A106?
ASTM A53 covers welded and seamless pipe for general mechanical and pressure use. ASTM A106 covers seamless pipe for high-temperature service and has tighter chemistry control. A106 is commonly specified in refineries and process plants.
How do I calculate steel pipe weight per metre?
Use (outside diameter − wall thickness) × wall thickness × 0.02466 with dimensions in mm. A 114.3 × 6.02 mm pipe weighs about 16.1 kg/m. Try our pipe weight calculator.
Are galvanized pipes suitable for drinking water?
Galvanized pipe has historically been used for water, but many current specifications prefer other materials for potable lines. Follow the project specification and the requirements of the relevant water authority.
