ASTM A53 vs A106 Pipe: Differences and When to Use Each
ASTM A53 vs A106 carbon steel pipe compared: welded vs seamless, temperature service, chemistry, testing, grades A/B/C, dual certification and typical applications.

Short answer: ASTM A53 covers seamless and welded (ERW and furnace-butt-welded) black and galvanized pipe for general mechanical and pressure use. ASTM A106 covers only seamless pipe for high-temperature service, with tighter chemistry requirements. Refineries and process plants often specify A106 Gr.B; water, structural and utility piping often uses A53 Gr.B.
A53 and A106 are the two most common carbon steel pipe standards. They look similar on paper but are intended for different services.
Scope
| Item | ASTM A53 | ASTM A106 |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Seamless (S), ERW (E), furnace butt-welded (F) | Seamless only |
| Service | General mechanical and pressure | High-temperature service |
| Finish | Black or hot-dip galvanized | Black |
| Grades | A, B | A, B, C |
Mechanical properties (Grade B)
| Property | A53 Gr.B | A106 Gr.B |
|---|---|---|
| Min. yield | 35 ksi (240 MPa) | 35 ksi (240 MPa) |
| Min. tensile | 60 ksi (415 MPa) | 60 ksi (415 MPa) |
The headline strengths are the same, but A106 has more chemistry controls (including silicon for killed steel) and is intended for elevated temperature.
Typical applications
A53
- Water and fire protection lines (where permitted)
- Compressed air and low-pressure steam
- Structural and mechanical uses (columns, handrails, piling)
- Galvanized pipe for general plumbing and outdoor use
A106
- Refinery and petrochemical process piping
- Power plant and boiler piping
- High-temperature, high-pressure steam and hydrocarbons
Dual and triple certification
Seamless pipe is often certified to A53/A106/API 5L Gr.B together. Check the certificate actually lists all claimed standards (mill test certificates).
Sizes and schedules
Both follow ASME B36.10M dimensions. See pipe schedule chart explained and how to calculate pipe weight.
Choosing
- Follow the piping class in the project specification
- High temperature or critical process → A106
- General service, galvanized needs, structural → A53
- Pipelines → API 5L (API 5L grades)
