Steel weight calculator
Estimate theoretical steel weight for plates, pipes, hollow sections, beams, angles and bars. Results show kg per metre, per piece and total tonnage.

Theoretical weights. Rolling tolerances, corner radii and coatings change actual weights by a few percent. Use certified mill weights for invoicing and design.
Formulas used
All formulas use a density of 7,850 kg/m³ for carbon steel unless another material is selected. Dimensions are in millimetres and lengths in metres.
| Shape | Formula (kg/m) |
|---|---|
| Plate | t × 7.85 kg/m² |
| Pipe / CHS | (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 |
| SHS / RHS | (2(B + H) − 4t) × t × 0.00785 |
| Angle | (A + B − t) × t × 0.00785 |
| Flat bar | w × t × 0.00785 |
| Round bar | d² × 0.006165 |
| Square bar | a² × 0.00785 |
Worked example
A 114.3 mm × 6.02 mm pipe (4" Schedule 40): (114.3 − 6.02) × 6.02 × 0.02466 = 16.07 kg/m. Six-metre lengths weigh about 96.4 kg each, so 50 lengths weigh about 4.82 tonnes.
Limitations
- Hollow sections and angles ignore corner and root radii, so results are slightly higher than published tables.
- Rolling tolerances can vary actual weight by several percent.
- Galvanizing adds mass (roughly 0.5–0.6 kg/m² for typical coatings).
