Steel storage tanks for water, fire protection and fuel

Above-ground steel tanks store water, fire fighting reserves, diesel, chemicals and process fluids at farms, factories, compounds and industrial plants.

Scope of work

We handle enquiries for field-welded and shop-built tanks, galvanized bolted panel tanks and accessories, designed to the relevant code for the stored product and site conditions.

  • Welded vertical tanks (e.g., API 650 / AWWA D100)
  • Horizontal shop-built tanks and fuel tanks
  • Galvanized bolted / sectional tanks
  • Fire water tanks to NFPA 22 requirements
  • Ladders, platforms, nozzles, manways and vents
  • Internal lining and external coating

Deliverables

  • Design calculations and GA drawings
  • Fabricated or erected tank
  • NDT and hydrotest reports
  • Coating records and data book

What we need from you

  • Capacity and stored product
  • Site location and foundation status
  • Applicable code / authority requirements
  • Nozzle and accessory list

Process

How the work is delivered

  1. STEP 01

    Sizing

Capacity, product, temperature, site wind and seismic loads, and foundation details are defined.

  2. STEP 02

    Design

Shell, bottom and roof are designed to the selected code with nozzle schedule and accessories.

  3. STEP 03

    Fabrication

Plates are cut, rolled and prepared; shop tanks are fully fabricated, field tanks are pre-fabricated for site welding.

  4. STEP 04

    Erection & testing

Tanks are erected, welded, inspected (including NDT) and hydrotested.

  5. STEP 05

    Coating & handover

Internal lining and external paint are applied and documented.

Quality control

  • Welding procedures and welder qualifications
  • Radiography or UT per code
  • Vacuum box testing of bottom welds
  • Hydrostatic test
  • Coating DFT and holiday testing for linings

Steel Storage Tanks: FAQs

What standard is used for steel water tanks?
Welded steel water tanks are commonly designed to AWWA D100 or API 650. Fire water storage must also meet NFPA 22 and Civil Defense requirements.
Welded or bolted tank — which is better?
Welded tanks suit large capacities and long service life. Bolted galvanized tanks are faster to install, relocatable and good for remote sites with limited welding resources.
How are tank bottoms tested?
Bottom plate welds are typically vacuum-box tested for leaks before hydrotesting the full tank.
