Steel flat bars, square bars and round bars

Merchant bars are workhorse materials for fabricators, workshops and machine shops: brackets, gates and grilles, base frames, shafts, pins and machined parts.

Overview

We handle enquiries for hot-rolled mild steel bars and engineering grades for machining, in standard lengths or cut to size.

Available forms

  • Flat bars
  • Square bars (solid)
  • Round bars
  • Solid rectangular bars
  • Bright drawn / cold finished bars
  • Engineering steel bars (EN8, EN19/4140, EN24)

Selection guidance

How to specify flat, square & round bars

01

Mild steel or engineering grade

Mild steel is easy to weld and form. Machined, wear or torque-carrying parts usually need medium-carbon or alloy grades.

02

Bright bar for accuracy

Cold-finished bars have tighter tolerances and better surface finish, which reduces machining time.

03

Request hardness data

For engineering grades, ask for heat treatment condition and hardness on the certificate.

Documents to request

Mill test certificate · Hardness / heat treatment record for alloy grades

Flat, Square & Round Bars: FAQs

How much does a 50 × 5 mm flat bar weigh?
50 × 5 × 0.00785 = 1.96 kg per metre, so a 6 m length weighs about 11.8 kg.
What is EN8 steel used for?
EN8 (C45-type medium carbon steel) is used for shafts, bolts, gears and general engineering parts that need more strength than mild steel.
Can bars be supplied galvanized?
Yes, flat bars in particular are commonly hot-dip galvanized for earthing and outdoor fabrication.
