Hollow sections and steel tubes (SHS, RHS, CHS)

Hollow structural sections combine high strength with a clean appearance, making them a common choice for columns, trusses, canopies, handrails, gates and furniture frames.

Overview

Cold-formed sections to EN 10219 or ASTM A500 cover most building and fabrication needs; hot-finished sections to EN 10210 are specified where uniform properties and tighter corner radii are required.

Available forms

  • Square hollow sections (SHS)
  • Rectangular hollow sections (RHS)
  • Circular hollow sections (CHS)
  • Galvanized and pre-galvanized tubes
  • Mechanical tubes

How to specify hollow sections & steel tubes

01

Cold-formed or hot-finished

Cold-formed is economical and widely available. Hot-finished sections have more uniform properties and are specified for some heavy structural and fatigue applications.

02

Galvanize after fabrication outdoors

Pre-galvanized tube has a thin coating and bare welds. Hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication gives far better protection for exposed structures.

03

Check wall thickness tolerance

Cold-formed sections can have wall tolerances that affect design capacity. Confirm the design assumption with your engineer.

Hollow Sections & Steel Tubes: FAQs

What is the difference between SHS, RHS and CHS?
SHS is square, RHS is rectangular and CHS is circular. All are hollow structural sections; the choice depends on load direction, connection detailing and appearance.
Is a steel tube the same as a steel pipe?
Not exactly. Pipes are specified by nominal size and schedule for conveying fluids. Tubes and hollow sections are specified by outside dimensions and wall thickness for structural and mechanical use.
How do I estimate SHS weight?
A close estimate is 4 × t × (B − t) × 0.00785 kg per metre, with B (side) and t (wall) in mm. Corner radii make the real weight slightly lower; use the manufacturer's table for final figures.
