Steel plates: structural, pressure vessel and wear grades

Steel plate is the raw material behind base plates, gussets, tank shells, vessel heads, bridge girders and heavy fabricated assemblies. The right choice depends on thickness, grade, toughness requirements and how the plate will be cut and welded.

Overview

We source plates in full mill sizes or cut to your dimensions, with certification matched to the design code. For pressure equipment and low-temperature service, we confirm impact testing and normalising requirements before quoting.

Available forms

  • Structural plates (S275, S355, A36, A572)
  • Pressure vessel plates (ASTM A516 Gr.60/70, EN 10028 P265GH/P355GH)
  • Chequered (tread) plates
  • Abrasion-resistant plates on request
  • Cut-to-size, profile cut and bevelled plates

How to specify steel plates

01

Toughness for thick or cold service

Thicker plates and dynamically loaded parts often need a J0, J2 or impact-tested grade. Check the design specification for Charpy energy and test temperature.

02

Specify UT where lamination matters

For plates welded in the through-thickness direction (e.g., heavy T-joints), ask for ultrasonic testing or Z-quality to reduce lamellar tearing risk.

03

Buy cut-to-size to reduce waste

Supplying a nesting or cutting list lets plates be profile-cut before delivery, reducing offcut waste and handling on site.

Steel Plates: FAQs

How do I calculate the weight of a steel plate?
Multiply length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. For example, a 2.5 m × 1.25 m × 10 mm plate weighs about 245 kg. Use our steel plate weight calculator for quick estimates.
Is A36 the same as S275?
They are close but not identical. ASTM A36 has a minimum yield of 250 MPa; S275 has 275 MPa for thinner plates. Substitution must be approved by the designer.
Which plate is used for water storage tanks?
Carbon steel tanks commonly use structural grades such as S275/S355 or A36, with A516 used where pressure-design codes require it. The tank design code (e.g., API 650 or AWWA D100) sets the permitted materials.
