Steel for oil, gas and petrochemical facilities

Saudi Arabia's hydrocarbon sector — upstream fields, refineries and the petrochemical clusters of Jubail, Yanbu and Rabigh — demands steel with strict specifications, documentation and inspection.

Industry context

Client specifications from operators and EPC contractors typically go beyond international standards, with approved vendor lists, additional testing and full traceability.

Key considerations

  • Operator specifications and approved vendor requirements
  • EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certification
  • Positive material identification and NDT
  • Local content expectations such as IKTVA

Piping

Seamless and welded carbon steel pipe (ASTM A106, API 5L), stainless and duplex for corrosive service.

Structures

Pipe racks, equipment structures, platforms and shelters, often hot-dip galvanized.

Plates

Pressure vessel plate (ASTM A516) and impact-tested structural plates.

Questions to settle before you buy

  • Which client specification and revision applies?
  • Is 3.2 certification with third-party witness required?
  • Are there sour-service (NACE MR0175) requirements?
  • What coating system is specified?

FAQs

What is a 3.2 certificate?
An EN 10204 3.2 certificate is validated by both the manufacturer's inspector and an independent inspector or the purchaser's representative, giving a higher level of assurance than 3.1.
What is sour service steel?
Steel for environments containing hydrogen sulphide, which must meet hardness and composition limits such as those in NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 to resist cracking.
