API 5L Line Pipe Grades Explained: Gr.B to X70, PSL1 vs PSL2
API 5L line pipe explained: grades B, X42, X52, X60, X65, X70, PSL1 vs PSL2 requirements, sour service, seamless and welded types, and how to read a pipe designation.

Short answer: API 5L (also ISO 3183) covers line pipe for oil, gas and water pipelines. The grade number after X indicates minimum yield strength in ksi, so X52 has 52 ksi (360 MPa) yield. PSL1 is the basic product level; PSL2 adds mandatory toughness testing, tighter chemistry, maximum yield and tensile limits and more inspection.
API 5L is the most widely used specification for pipeline pipe worldwide and is central to oil, gas and water transmission projects in Saudi Arabia.
Grades
| Grade | Min. yield | Min. tensile |
|---|---|---|
| B | 245 MPa (35.5 ksi) | 415 MPa |
| X42 | 290 MPa (42 ksi) | 415 MPa |
| X52 | 360 MPa (52 ksi) | 460 MPa |
| X60 | 415 MPa (60 ksi) | 520 MPa |
| X65 | 450 MPa (65 ksi) | 535 MPa |
| X70 | 485 MPa (70 ksi) | 570 MPa |
Higher grades allow thinner walls for the same pressure, reducing tonnage on long pipelines, but demand tighter manufacturing and welding control.
PSL1 vs PSL2
| Requirement | PSL1 | PSL2 |
|---|---|---|
| Charpy impact test | Not mandatory | Mandatory |
| Max. yield and tensile | No | Yes |
| Carbon equivalent limit | No | Yes |
| NDT of weld seam | Basic | More extensive |
| Traceability | Standard | Full |
PSL2 is standard for most energy-sector pipelines in the Kingdom.
Pipe types under API 5L
- SMLS — seamless
- HFW / ERW — high-frequency welded
- LSAW — longitudinal submerged arc welded
- SAWH / SSAW — helical (spiral) submerged arc welded

Sour service
For hydrogen sulphide environments, API 5L Annex H and NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 add hardness limits and hydrogen-induced cracking testing. Grades carry an "S" suffix (e.g. X52MS).
Reading a designation
"API 5L X52M PSL2, HFW, 12.75" × 9.53 mm, bevelled" tells you grade, delivery condition, product level, manufacturing method, size and end finish.
Coatings
Pipelines usually need external coatings such as 3LPE or FBE and sometimes internal linings — specify these with the pipe order.
