Plasma vs Laser vs Oxy-Fuel Cutting for Steel Plate
Compare CNC plasma, laser and oxy-fuel cutting of steel: thickness ranges, accuracy, edge quality, heat-affected zone, speed and cost, and which to choose for fabrication.

Short answer: Laser cutting gives the highest precision and finest edges on thin to medium plate. Plasma cutting is fast and economical for thin to medium-thick carbon and stainless steel. Oxy-fuel cutting is slow but handles very thick carbon steel plate cheaply. Choice depends on thickness, tolerance, edge quality and cost.
Plate profiling — cutting base plates, gussets, flanges and parts — is central to fabrication. The three main thermal methods each have a sweet spot.
Comparison
| Factor | Laser | Plasma | Oxy-fuel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical thickness | Thin–medium | Thin–medium-thick | Medium–very thick |
| Accuracy | Highest | Good | Moderate |
| Edge quality | Very fine | Good (slight bevel) | Rougher, slag |
| Kerf width | Narrowest | Medium | Widest |
| Heat-affected zone | Small | Medium | Largest |
| Speed (thin plate) | Very fast | Fast | Slow |
| Speed (thick plate) | Limited | Moderate | Good |
| Materials | Carbon, stainless, aluminium | Conductive metals | Carbon steel only |
| Running cost | Higher capital | Moderate | Low |
When to use each
Laser: small holes, intricate shapes, tight tolerances, thinner plate, stainless sheet.
Plasma: general fabrication plate, base plates, gussets, stainless and carbon steel; high-definition plasma narrows the gap with laser.
Oxy-fuel: heavy plates for base plates, lifting lugs, heavy machinery parts; multiple torches for productivity.
Other methods
- Waterjet: no heat-affected zone, any material, slower
- Sawing: for sections and tubes
- Shearing: fast straight cuts on thinner plate
Holes for bolts
Thermal-cut bolt holes may need reaming or are restricted in some specifications; drilled holes are often required for structural connections. Check the project specification.
Nesting
CNC software nests parts on plates to minimise waste (reducing steel waste).
