Sandwich Panels for Warehouses in Saudi Heat: PU, PIR or Rock Wool?

Insulated sandwich panels for Saudi warehouses and cold stores: PU vs PIR vs rock wool cores, thickness, U-values, fire performance, Saudi Building Code energy rules and installation.

Saudi Steel Work Editorial Team · · 3 min read

Short answer: Sandwich panels have two steel skins bonded to an insulating core. PU and PIR cores give the best insulation per thickness, with PIR offering better fire behaviour than PU; rock wool cores are non-combustible and preferred where fire performance governs. Thickness is chosen for the required thermal performance and use, such as cold storage.

In Saudi Arabia's heat, the building envelope strongly affects energy costs, product quality and worker comfort. Insulated sandwich panels are the most common solution for warehouses, factories and cold stores.

Construction

  • Outer skin: pre-painted steel (often PPGI or PPGL), profiled on roofs
  • Core: insulation bonded to both skins
  • Inner skin: pre-painted steel, often lightly profiled

Core options

Core Insulation Fire Weight Notes
PU (polyurethane) Very good Combustible Light Economical
PIR (polyisocyanurate) Very good Better than PU Light Common upgrade
Rock wool (mineral wool) Good Non-combustible Heavier For fire-sensitive buildings
EPS Moderate Combustible Light Lower cost, less common for industrial

Choosing thickness

Thickness is selected to achieve the thermal performance required by the design and the Saudi Building Code energy provisions, and by use:

  • Ambient warehouses: moderate thickness
  • Air-conditioned factories: greater thickness
  • Cold and freezer stores: significantly thicker panels

Fire safety

Civil Defense and insurer requirements may restrict combustible cores in some occupancies. Rock wool or certified PIR panels with fire test reports are often required. Ask for test certificates.

Installation points

  • Correct fixings and thermal washers
  • Sealing at joints to prevent air and moisture leaks
  • Protecting factory film until installation, then removing promptly in sun
  • Proper flashings at ridges, eaves and openings

Benefits

  • Lower cooling loads and energy cost
  • Better product protection
  • Fast installation — one component instead of liner, insulation and outer sheet

Frequently asked questions

Are sandwich panels required in Saudi warehouses?
Not as such, but building envelopes must meet Saudi Building Code energy requirements for the building type, and insulated panels are a common way to comply.
How thick should cold store panels be?
Cold and freezer stores typically use much thicker panels than ambient warehouses; the thickness is designed for the internal temperature.
