Corrugated vs Trapezoidal Roofing Sheets: Which Is Better?

Corrugated and trapezoidal metal roofing sheets compared: profile, span, strength, water shedding, fixing, appearance and the best choice for Saudi warehouses and farms.

Saudi Steel Work Editorial Team · · 3 min read

Short answer: Trapezoidal sheets have tall flat-topped ribs that make them stiffer, so they span further between purlins and are the standard for warehouses and industrial roofs. Corrugated sheets have a rounded wave profile, are lighter and cheaper, and suit sheds, farm buildings, fencing and smaller roofs.

Both corrugated and trapezoidal sheets are roll-formed from coated coil, but their profiles behave differently on a roof.

Profiles

Corrugated: a continuous sine-like wave with shallow depth. Classic look, flexible, lighter.

Trapezoidal (box profile): tall ribs with flat crests and wide pans. Stiffer, better load capacity, cleaner industrial appearance.

Comparison

Factor Corrugated Trapezoidal
Stiffness Lower Higher
Purlin spacing Closer Wider
Water capacity Lower Higher
Walkability Limited Better
Appearance Traditional Modern industrial
Cost per m² Lower Slightly higher
Typical use Sheds, farms, fences Warehouses, factories

Saudi considerations

  • Heat: light colours and Galvalume or PPGL reduce heat gain; insulated panels help more (sandwich panels)
  • Dust and sand: steeper slopes and larger profiles shed dust better
  • Wind: use correct fixings and spacing for SBC wind loads
  • Coastal sites: heavier coating and quality paint systems (paint systems)

Thickness

Roofing sheets are usually specified by base metal thickness (BMT), typically 0.4–0.7 mm. Thicker sheets span further and resist foot traffic and denting.

Accessories

Ridge caps, flashings, closures, fasteners with sealing washers and translucent skylight sheets must match the profile.

Bottom line

For warehouses and industrial buildings, trapezoidal profiles are the usual choice. For small sheds, farms and fencing, corrugated is economical.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum roof slope for metal sheets?
It depends on the profile and laps; many trapezoidal sheets work at low pitches, while corrugated sheets usually need steeper slopes. Follow the manufacturer's guidance.
Should roofing screws go in the crest or valley?
For most profiles, fixings through the crest reduce leak risk on roofs; wall cladding is often fixed in the valley. Follow the manufacturer's fixing details.
