Pre-Painted Steel: Polyester vs SMP vs PVDF Paint Systems
Compare coil coating paint systems for PPGI and PPGL: polyester, silicone-modified polyester (SMP), PVDF and HDP — UV resistance, colour retention, cost and Saudi climate use.

Short answer: Polyester is the economical standard for mild exposure; SMP (silicone-modified polyester) offers better UV and chalk resistance; PVDF provides the best colour and gloss retention for high-UV, high-visibility facades. In Saudi Arabia's intense sun, SMP or PVDF is often worth the extra cost for exposed roofs and walls.
Pre-painted steel (PPGI on galvanized substrate, PPGL on Galvalume) is coated on a continuous coil coating line. The paint system decides how long the colour and gloss last under sun and weather.
The layers
- Metallic coating (zinc or aluminium-zinc)
- Pre-treatment
- Primer
- Top coat (the paint system)
- Back coat on the reverse side
Paint systems compared
| System | UV / colour retention | Flexibility | Cost | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polyester (PE) | Fair | Good | Low | Interiors, mild exterior |
| SMP | Good | Moderate | Medium | Roofs and walls in sunny climates |
| HDP (high durability polyester) | Good to very good | Good | Medium | Exterior roofs and walls |
| PVDF | Excellent | Good | High | Prestige facades, high UV |
Why the Saudi climate matters
Intense UV and high surface temperatures accelerate chalking and fading. Coastal humidity and salt attack cut edges and scratches. Desert sand can abrade surfaces. Choosing a higher-performance system for exposed surfaces reduces maintenance and premature recladding.
What to specify
- Substrate and coating mass (e.g. AZ150 or Z275)
- Paint system and dry film thickness of top coat
- Colour (RAL code) and gloss
- Back coat type
- Warranty terms from the coater, if needed
Handling tips
- Remove protective film soon after installation; film baked on in sun is hard to remove
- Use touch-up paint on cut edges and scratches
- Avoid contact with wet cement or incompatible metals
