Universal Beams vs Universal Columns (UB vs UC)
UB vs UC explained: British Standard BS 4-1 sections, shape differences, designations like 457×191×67 UB, typical uses and equivalents to IPE and HE sections.

Short answer: Universal beams (UB) are deep, narrow-flange I-sections designed for bending; universal columns (UC) are near-square H-sections with wide, thick flanges designed for compression. Both follow BS 4-1 and are designated by depth × width × mass, e.g. 457×191×67 UB.
Universal beams and universal columns are the British Standard hot-rolled I and H sections, defined in BS 4-1 and still widely specified on projects in the Gulf designed to British practice.
Shape
- UB (universal beam) — depth significantly greater than flange width. High strong-axis stiffness for bending.
- UC (universal column) — depth and flange width roughly equal, with thick flanges for good buckling resistance about both axes.
Designation
Sections are named serial size × mass per metre:
| Designation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 457×191×67 UB | ~457 mm deep, ~191 mm flange, 67 kg/m |
| 305×305×97 UC | ~305 mm deep, ~305 mm flange, 97 kg/m |
| 203×133×25 UB | ~203 mm deep, ~133 mm flange, 25 kg/m |
The actual depth varies within a serial size as mass changes, because flange thickness changes.
Typical uses
UB: floor beams, rafters, lintels, crane girders (with checks), transfer beams. UC: columns, heavily loaded short beams, bearing piles (similar UBP sections exist).
Equivalents in other systems
| Role | British | European | American |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beam | UB | IPE | W-shape (deep) |
| Column | UC | HEA / HEB | W-shape (near-square) |
They are not interchangeable without design checks. If your drawing calls for UB/UC and the supplier offers IPE/HE, ask the engineer first. See IPE vs HEA vs HEB and types of structural steel sections.
Grades
UB and UC sections are normally supplied in S275 or S355 to EN 10025-2 (grade guide).
Buying tips
- Specify the full designation including mass — "457 UB" alone is ambiguous.
- Confirm availability; some British sizes are less commonly stocked in the region.
- Request 3.1 certificates.
