Steel Quality Inspection Checklist: From Delivery to Dispatch

A practical steel quality inspection checklist for buyers and fabricators: receipt inspection, certificate review, dimensional checks, surface, welding, NDT, coating and documentation.

Short answer: A steel quality inspection checklist covers receipt inspection (documents, heat numbers, dimensions, surface), storage and traceability, fabrication checks (fit-up, welding, NDT, dimensions), surface treatment (blast profile, DFT, galvanizing thickness), and final documentation before dispatch or handover.

Use this checklist as a starting point for your inspection and test plan (ITP). Adapt it to your project specification.

1. Receipt inspection

  • Delivery note matches PO
  • Certificates present, correct type (e.g. 3.1) (MTC guide)
  • Heat numbers on steel match certificates
  • Grade and standard as ordered
  • Dimensions within tolerance (tolerances)
  • Surface: no laminations, deep pitting, excessive rust, damage
  • Quantity and lengths correct
  • PMI for alloy and stainless where required (PMI)

2. Storage and traceability

  • Stored off ground, by grade and heat
  • Stainless segregated from carbon steel
  • Heat numbers transferred to cut pieces

3. Fabrication

  • Approved shop drawings in use
  • Qualified WPS and welders (WPS/PQR)
  • Consumables stored correctly
  • Fit-up and preheat checked
  • Visual weld inspection on 100% of welds
  • NDT per ITP: MT, UT, RT as specified (NDT guide)
  • Dimensional checks of assemblies
  • Bolt holes: size, position, edge distance

4. Surface treatment

  • Surface cleanliness and profile before coating
  • Ambient conditions within limits
  • DFT per coat recorded
  • Galvanizing thickness measured (galvanizing)
  • Repairs documented

5. Final inspection and dispatch

  • Piece marks correct and legible
  • Packing protects coatings
  • Packing list matches erection sequence

6. Documentation

  • Material certificates
  • Weld maps and NDT reports
  • Coating reports
  • Non-conformance reports and closures
  • Final quality dossier
