Steel Platforms, Stairs and Handrails: Design and Fabrication Basics
Industrial steel platforms, stairs, ladders and handrails: typical loads, grating vs chequered plate, stair geometry, handrail heights, toe boards, galvanizing and installation.

Short answer: Industrial steel platforms are framed with beams and columns and floored with grating or chequered plate. Stairs, ladders and handrails must follow applicable safety standards for geometry, guard heights, toe boards and loads, typically referencing international standards like ISO 14122 or OSHA where the project specifies. Hot-dip galvanizing is common for durability.
Access platforms, stairs and walkways are needed in every plant, warehouse and utility facility. They are safety-critical, so design and fabrication must follow standards.
Platforms
Structure: beams (often channels or I-sections) on columns or brackets, braced as needed.
Flooring options:
| Floor | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Steel grating | Light, self-cleaning, ventilated | Small objects fall through |
| Chequered plate | Solid, contains spills | Heavier, can be slippery when wet |
| Expanded metal | Light, economical | Lower load capacity |
See expanded metal vs perforated sheet vs grating and chequered plate.
Loads: design live loads depend on use (pedestrian access, maintenance with equipment, storage). The engineer sets them.
Stairs
- Consistent riser height and tread depth
- Typical industrial stair angles between about 30° and 45°
- Landings at intervals per standard
- Treads of grating with nosings, or chequered plate
Ladders
Used where stairs are impractical. Cages or fall-arrest systems are often required above certain heights per the applicable standard.
Handrails and guardrails
- Top rail height commonly around 1,000–1,100 mm
- Intermediate rail
- Toe boards to stop objects falling
- Design for specified horizontal loads
Standards often referenced include ISO 14122 parts 1–4 and OSHA 1910 Subpart D, depending on the client.
Fabrication and finishing
- Shop-welded modules to reduce site work
- Hot-dip galvanizing for outdoor and corrosive areas (galvanizing explained)
- Bolted site connections
Retrofit projects
Accurate site surveys prevent clashes with pipes, cable trays and equipment.
