Short answer: Steel quotations usually have short validity because mill prices move frequently. Payment terms range from advance payment to credit periods or letters of credit. Escalation clauses let prices change with an agreed index. Agree all three in writing before placing the order.
Steel buyers often focus on price per tonne and overlook the commercial terms around it. Validity, payment terms and escalation can matter as much as the headline price.
Price validity
Steel prices respond to raw materials, energy and trade conditions (what affects steel prices). Suppliers protect themselves with short validity periods — sometimes only a few days for volatile products.
Tips:
- Ask for validity that matches your approval process
- Get internal approvals lined up before requesting final prices
- For phased deliveries, agree whether prices are fixed for all phases
Payment terms
| Term | How it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Advance payment | Pay before dispatch or production | New relationships, special orders |
| Partial advance | E.g. deposit, balance before delivery | Mill orders, fabrication |
| Credit (e.g. 30/60 days) | Pay after delivery and invoice | Established customers |
| Letter of credit | Bank guarantees payment against documents | Imports, large orders |
Credit costs money; suppliers price it in. A cash price and a 60-day credit price are not directly comparable.
Escalation clauses
On long projects, a fixed price for steel delivered months later is risky for the supplier, so they may propose escalation. If you accept one:
- Define the index or reference precisely
- Set a base date and base value
- Agree a threshold below which no adjustment applies
- Make it two-way — prices fall as well as rise
- Cap the adjustment if possible
Protecting your position
- Fix prices for the critical early phases
- Lock in mill orders early for large tonnage (stock vs mill order)
- Keep VAT separate in all comparisons — VAT in Saudi Arabia is charged in addition to the price
Put it in the purchase order
Restate validity, payment terms, escalation and delivery terms in the purchase order. Disputes usually come from assumptions that were never written down. See our steel procurement checklist.
