Planning Steel Delivery and Logistics to Saudi Project Sites

How to plan steel deliveries in Saudi Arabia: truck types, lengths, offloading, city truck restrictions, plant permits, summer work hours, phasing and site storage.

Short answer: Plan steel delivery by confirming maximum lengths and loads your site can take, who provides offloading, permitted truck hours in cities, access permits for industrial plants, phased delivery to match the programme, and a dry, level storage area with dunnage.

Late, wrong or unloadable deliveries are a common cause of lost days on steel-intensive projects. A short logistics plan agreed with your supplier prevents most problems.

Lengths and vehicles

  • 12 m is the standard maximum for most long products on flatbed trailers.
  • Longer members (e.g. fabricated rafters) need extendable trailers and possibly escorts or permits.
  • Coils need coil-carrying trailers with cradles; confirm weight limits.
  • Plates above standard widths may need special loading.

If your site cannot take 12 m lengths, order cut-to-length material — see reducing steel waste.

Offloading

Agree who provides the crane or forklift and its capacity. Bundles of beams, rebar (often around 2 tonnes) and coils need suitable equipment. Have lifting gear inspected and a banksman available.

City restrictions

Major cities restrict heavy truck movements at certain hours. Plan deliveries for permitted windows, and allow for traffic around Hajj and Ramadan in Makkah and Madinah. Our city pages list practical notes for each region.

Industrial plants and giga-project sites

Plants in Jubail, Yanbu and Rabigh, and major development sites, require gate passes, driver documents and sometimes vehicle inspections. Arrange these before dispatch to avoid trucks waiting at gates.

Summer working hours

Saudi regulations prohibit outdoor work in direct sun during the midday hours over the summer period (typically 12:00–15:00 from mid-June to mid-September). Plan offloading outside those hours.

Phasing

Deliver steel in the sequence it will be used:

  1. Anchor bolts and embedded items first
  2. Primary structure by erection zone
  3. Secondary steel, decking and cladding last

Phasing reduces congestion, double handling and corrosion on stored steel.

Site storage checklist

  • Level, drained ground
  • Timber dunnage to keep steel off the ground
  • Separate storage by grade and heat number
  • Stainless steel kept away from carbon steel (why stainless rusts)
  • Rebar protected from mud and oil (rebar storage and rust)

Documents on arrival

Every delivery should come with a delivery note and certificates. Check quantities and heat numbers before signing — see documents to request from steel suppliers.

When you request a quotation, include your site location, access constraints and phasing so delivery can be planned from day one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the longest steel length that can be delivered by road?
12 m lengths are standard on flatbed trailers. Longer items need extendable trailers and may need special permits.
Can steel be stored outside on site?
Yes, for short periods, if kept off the ground on timber dunnage and drained. Galvanized and painted steel should be stored to avoid trapped water and damage.
