Steel Coil Buying Guide for Saudi Manufacturers and Roll Formers
How to buy steel coils: HRC, CRC, GI, GL and PPGI, coil ID and weight, width, grade, coating, paint system, tolerances, packaging, certificates and supply planning.

Short answer: When buying steel coil, specify product type (HRC, CRC, GI, GL, PPGI), grade, thickness, width, coating mass or paint system and colour, coil inner diameter, maximum coil weight, edge condition, tolerances, packaging and monthly volume. Matching coils to your line equipment is as important as price.
Coils are the most economical way to buy flat steel in volume. But a coil that does not fit your line or behaves badly in forming costs more than any price saving.
1. Choose the product
| Product | Typical use |
|---|---|
| HRC (hot rolled coil) | Pipe and tube mills, structural roll forming, heavy fabrication |
| HRPO | Parts needing clean surface without CR cost |
| CRC (cold rolled coil) | Appliances, panels, precision parts |
| GI (galvanized) | Purlins, decking, ducts, panels |
| GL (Galvalume) | Roofing and cladding |
| PPGI / PPGL | Coloured roofing, facades, sandwich panels |

2. Grade and mechanical properties
Forming lines need predictable yield strength and elongation. Common grades:
- DX51D–DX54D (coated forming grades, EN 10346)
- S250GD–S350GD (structural coated grades)
- DC01–DC04 (cold rolled)
- DD11–DD13 and S235–S355 (hot rolled)
3. Dimensions and tolerances
- Thickness and tolerance (normal or restricted)
- Width (master coil or slit width)
- Flatness and camber requirements
- Mill edge or trimmed edge
4. Line compatibility
- Inner diameter: 508 or 610 mm
- Maximum coil weight your decoiler and crane can handle
- Maximum outer diameter
- Coil orientation (eye to sky or eye to wall)
5. Coatings and paint
- Zinc coating mass (e.g. Z120, Z275) or AZ150
- Paint system, thickness, colour code (RAL), gloss
- Back coat specification for PPGI
6. Packaging and labels
Ask for waterproof wrapping, edge protectors and labels showing coil number, heat number, grade, dimensions and weight.
7. Supply planning
Coil users benefit from forecasts and scheduled supply rather than spot buying. Share monthly volumes to secure allocation and more stable pricing.
Estimating coil length
Length (m) = weight (kg) ÷ (width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85). A 5,000 kg coil, 1.22 m wide, 0.5 mm thick ≈ 1,044 m.
Processing
If you need narrower strips or sheets, consider coil slitting and cut-to-length.
