Coil Slitting and Cut-to-Length Explained

How coil slitting and cut-to-length lines work, achievable tolerances, burr and edge quality, multiple-width set-ups, scrap, and when buying processed steel saves money.

Short answer: Coil slitting runs a master coil through rotary knives to cut it lengthwise into narrower coils (mults). Cut-to-length lines uncoil, level and shear coil into flat sheets of a set length. Both turn standard master coils into sizes ready for production, reducing scrap and handling at the user's plant.

Most mills produce master coils around 1,000–1,500 mm wide. Few manufacturers use those widths directly. Slitting and cut-to-length lines convert coils into the strips and sheets production lines actually need.

Slitting

Process:

  1. Master coil is loaded on an uncoiler
  2. Strip passes through rotary knives set to the required widths
  3. Edges are trimmed
  4. Slit strips (mults) are recoiled separately

Example: a 1,250 mm coil can be slit into strips of, for instance, 300 mm, 300 mm, 300 mm and 340 mm, leaving a small trim on each edge.

Uses: feed for roll formers (purlins, decking, profiles), tube mills, stamping lines.

Cut-to-length (CTL)

Process:

  1. Uncoiling
  2. Levelling to remove coil set
  3. Measuring and shearing to length
  4. Stacking sheets in bundles

Uses: sheets for fabrication, panels, laser cutting, enclosures.

Quality factors

Factor Why it matters
Width tolerance Fit in roll-forming tooling
Burr height Safety and part quality
Camber Straightness of strip
Flatness (CTL) Laser cutting and appearance
Length tolerance (CTL) Part accuracy
Surface protection Painted and coated products

Benefits of buying processed steel

  • No need to own slitting or levelling equipment
  • Less scrap at your plant
  • Smaller, easier-to-handle coils and bundles
  • Faster production set-up

Information to provide

  • Material specification (grade, thickness, coating)
  • Slit widths and tolerances, or sheet length and tolerance
  • Maximum coil weight or bundle weight
  • Coil ID and packaging
  • Quantity

Frequently asked questions

What is edge trim scrap in slitting?
A narrow strip trimmed from each side of the master coil to produce clean edges and exact total width; it becomes scrap.
Can pre-painted coils be slit?
Yes, with appropriate tooling and protective film to avoid damaging the paint.
