ASTM A615 Grade 60 Rebar Explained

ASTM A615 Grade 60 reinforcing bar explained: 420 MPa yield, deformation pattern, bend test, markings, A615 vs A706, and use with SASO requirements in Saudi Arabia.

Short answer: ASTM A615 Grade 60 is deformed carbon-steel reinforcing bar with a minimum yield strength of 60,000 psi (420 MPa) and minimum tensile strength of 90,000 psi (620 MPa). It is the most commonly specified rebar grade on Saudi projects, used alongside applicable SASO technical regulations.

Most concrete structures in Saudi Arabia are reinforced with bars produced to — or equivalent to — ASTM A615 Grade 60. Here is what the standard requires and what buyers should check.

Key properties

Property Grade 60 (metric Grade 420)
Min. yield strength 60 ksi (420 MPa)
Min. tensile strength 90 ksi (620 MPa)
Elongation Specified minimum, varies by bar size
Bend test Must bend around a specified pin without cracking

Deformations

Bars have ribs (deformations) to bond with concrete. A615 controls rib spacing, height and gap to ensure bond strength.

Markings

Each bar carries a rolled-in mark sequence:

  1. Producer's mill identification
  2. Bar size
  3. Type of steel (S for A615)
  4. Grade mark (60 or one grade line)

These markings link bars to the mill certificate — useful for quality checks on delivery.

A615 vs A706

Feature A615 Gr.60 A706 Gr.60
Weldability Not controlled Controlled chemistry (carbon equivalent)
Max. yield No Yes (78 ksi)
Tensile/yield ratio Not specified ≥ 1.25
Use General RC Seismic, welded rebar

In the Saudi context

  • Reinforcing steel is regulated by SASO; conformity is required for products placed on the market (SASO certification).
  • Design under SBC 304 specifies reinforcement requirements.
  • Local mills produce rebar meeting these requirements in standard diameters.

Weight

Weight per metre is d² ÷ 162.2 — see rebar sizes and weights.

Buying tips

  • State the standard and grade in the PO
  • Request mill certificates per heat and SASO conformity documents
  • Check diameters by weight, not just by eye

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between A615 and A706?
A706 is a low-alloy rebar with controlled chemistry for weldability and ductility, plus a maximum yield limit, used in seismic and welded applications. A615 does not control weldability chemistry in the same way.
How do I identify Grade 60 bars?
Bars carry rolled-in markings identifying the producer, bar size, type of steel and grade, either with the number 60 or a single longitudinal grade line.
